Mastering TikTok to Grow Your Business

Who would have guessed it? The age of the creative, also known as 2021 is the year in history where social media is one of the most dominant and influential spaces that can grow businesses from 0 to 1,000+ customers. One of these leading platforms is none other than the social media app TikTok. If you haven’t heard of TikTok, may I ask – where have you been?! Certainly, in hiding because if you’re not an avid user of the app or using it to enhance your business, we need to change that.

TikTok was launched in September 2016 by Zhang Yiming – the Chinese founder of ByteDance. The social media platform in such a small space of time, in comparison to the likes of YouTube, Instagram and Twitter, has demanded a serious position against its competitors. It is now one of the most popular apps, not only for people like us (marketers, creators, and digital enthusiasts), but even your average Joe to anti-social teenage to retiree, is loving the app!

 

What makes TikTok so impactful? Well, the act of scrolling is certainly second nature to most of us smartphone owners. So, pairing this with endless hours of content – one funny video, life hack video, dance tutorial, cute dog video, political activism video, after another – how can an audience not get lost into the world of TikTok? There’s never a boring moment on the app because there quite literally are endless hours of content. In February 2021, the audience calculation of users was a staggering 1.1 billion, so you can imagine how much video content is circulating in the digital entertainment space for the app’s users.

 

Within this video central platform, it’s worth considering how we can adapt the platform to become a marketing tool and make our products stand out. TikTok’s business page encourages us to look at the ways that we can move away from the traditional form of advertising, and instead “Make TikToks, Make a new trend. Make a connection”. Within this idea, there is a very strong point. The average consumer in 2021, is far more conscious of the space of advertising. Meaning that now is the time to intersect the act of selling your products through the theme of entertainment that is provided on platforms such as TikTok.

 

So how can we create entertaining content while simultaneously selling our products? Well, TikTok for business is the platform “where you can unleash your brand’s creative side”. Representing a fully immersive and personal reflection of your brand is the perfect way to do this. Creating a trending hashtag to uplift your product and connect with new audiences is a key example. As demonstrated by the fashion brand Guess and their trending hashtag ‘#InMyDenim’, they encouraged their audience to record themselves showing how they styled their denim clothing.  This was effective as it inspired Guess’ audience to get connected with their brand, while at the same time creating content to further advertise Guess to new audiences. Trend setting in this form, by incorporating audience engagement, is both subtle and loud as it creates a memorable representation of their brand.

 

To finalise, trends are described in two ways. Firstly, “a general direction in which something is developing or changing”, and secondly, “a fashion”. Through an understanding of this, now is the time to represent your brand or product in a fashionably engaging and experimental way, using videography and digital marketing techniques. Whether that is reinventing existing trends by adding your unique brand identity through costume and visual codes, or by starting a new trend and creating a personalised hashtag.
